The Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela has sentenced 37-year-old Clara Masinga, a Mozambican national, to 23 years in prison for the murder of her 11-year-old stepdaughter, Jennifer Gumbi.
According to court proceedings, the tragic incident occurred after Masinga intentionally poisoned ice cream that was later consumed by the young girl. The motive was reportedly linked to domestic disputes involving the child’s mother.
Judge Takalani Ratshibvumo, in delivering the sentence, described the act as
“A cruel betrayal of parental trust.”
and emphasized the seriousness of crimes committed against vulnerable children.
The court acknowledged that while Masinga showed remorse, the premeditated nature of the act warranted a lengthy sentence to serve as a deterrent to similar offences.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Monica Nyuswa welcomed the sentence, saying it demonstrated that crimes against children would be met with the full weight of the law.
Child advocacy groups have also expressed their support for the ruling, calling it a necessary step in strengthening justice for minors and ensuring that the safety of children remains a national priority.
